Italians understand that a meal is more than just nourishment; it’s a social event that celebrates food and family. Dinners typically consist of several courses, concluding with dolce or dessert. Of course, when you want the best Italian desserts, visit Tony’s Pizza.
Many people enjoy a sweet treat to finish their meal. This tradition began with even the earliest civilizations serving fruit or honey-sweetened nuts. Later, when the sugar trade expanded into Europe, Italian pastry chefs began experimenting with this new ingredient.
Like traditional Italian meals, each region developed unique and iconic sweet treats. For example, panna cotta originated in the north, biscotti in the central area, and sfogliatelle in the south. Today, people everywhere enjoy delicious Italian cookies, pies, frozen treats, and pastries. Of course, some desserts are more famous than others, and it’s these we bake at Tony’s Pizza.
Many historians believe Sicilians began making these iconic pastries under Arab rule during the 8th and 9th centuries. Cannoli have a golden crust in a tubular shape filled with sweetened ricotta cheese.
To achieve the crispy crust, Sicilians use a local wine, Marsala, to prepare the dough. The alcohol keeps the dough light and pliable during production, and creates a crispy, textured surface when fried.
Traditionally, the creamy interior begins with sheep’s milk ricotta. However, when Italians settled in America, cow’s milk ricotta was a more readily available product. Sugar adds sweetness to the cheese while flavoring creates a more complex flavor.
The delightfully crunchy shell with the creamy interior makes this dessert hard to resist! And if you happen to have a really big craving, Tony’s has party-size trays of this wonderful dessert.
Many myths surround the origins of this dessert, dating it back to the 1800s. However, most historians agree that tiramisu emerged in the 1960s.
This dessert begins with ladyfingers, Italian sponge cakes with a light and airy texture. Chefs soak these in a mixture of espresso coffee and Marsala wine, rum, or some other liqueur. Next, bakers combine mascarpone, eggs, and sugar to create a creamy mixture.
Finally, chefs alternate layers of the soaked ladyfingers with the cream mixture and top it off with cocoa powder. The creamy richness of mascarpone combined with chocolate and coffee accents creates a truly decadent treat.
The star of this dessert is limoncello, a popular Italian liqueur made from lemons. Steeped in controversy, no one knows the exact origins of this alcoholic beverage or the cake.
What we do know is how delicious this cake tastes! It has a bright, citrusy flavor that fuses nicely with the creamy richness of the mascarpone icing.
People have been enjoying different versions of cheesecake for centuries. As the recipe passed to other countries, the locals added their twist to the dessert. For example, the Italians use a blend of ricotta and mascarpone to create their version.
Although we have several types of cheesecakes in America, the most popular is NY style. Invented by a New York restaurateur, Arnold Ruben incorporated cream cheese into his delectable dessert.
Italian sweet treats vary in flavors and baking techniques by region. The same is true for pastries, a specific type of dessert using a light, flaky crust. This category includes pies like torta della nonna (grandma’s cake) as well as cannoli.
Yet, Italy also boasts some delicious savory pastries. Focaccia di Recco and Mbriulata are 2 examples. While you may think calzones and strombolis fit into this category, they don’t. These dishes use a pizza or bread dough instead of a pastry dough.
Regardless of their designation, calzones and strombolis are one way to begin your meal at Tony’s. We also serve over a dozen appetizers, salads, subs, NY style pizza, and Italian entrees. You can view our menu by clicking on the 3 green lines at the top right-hand corner.
Similar to Italian dishes, some desserts transformed when immigrants arrived in America due to the scarcity of ingredients. Traditionally, many Italians also save certain treats for festivals or celebrations. However, in America, you can enjoy some of the best Italian desserts any day by stopping by Tony’s Pizza. Below, we answer a few questions about our establishments.
