In the Triad area? Visit our sister restaurant, Mario's Pizza!
Generally, Americans believe crust covered with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese is the original version of pizza. Although, well before tomato-based pizza, our ancestors consumed a version of pizza bianca. If you’re looking for great-tasting white pizza near me, continue that tradition and stop by Tony’s Pizza in the Charlotte and Hickory area.
Throughout the centuries, a form of flatbread with toppings sated appetites across the globe. For instance, ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians baked pita bread and topped it with home-grown ingredients. Generally, initial versions didn’t use tomatoes. Therefore, these early concoctions resembled the white pizza most people know today.
Around 1550, Italians began growing and adding tomatoes into their dishes. In fact, prior to that, Europeans believed tomatoes were poisonous. Once Americans figured out the benefits of tomatoes, news traveled back to the Old World. Finally, around the late 1880s Italian bakers began topping pizzas with tomatoes.
Meanwhile, many New Yorkers were clamoring for Italian flatbread or pizza. As this pizza-love spread, so did variations. Chefs experimented with thicker crusts, varying toppings and different sauces.
Obviously, the main characteristic of pizza bianca is its lack of tomato sauce. Without it, this pizza has a white appearance. Hence, its nickname.
While there are different versions of white pizza, the traditional Roman pizza bianca uses a few simple ingredients: a thin crust, olive oil, garlic, and mozzarella cheese. Occasionally, chefs use ricotta and other creative pizza toppings.
Simple yet satisfying, pizza bianca is a comforting meal. It’s even better when it’s from Italians who know their way around a kitchen and have family recipes to back them. With roots in Calabria, Italy, brothers Vinny, Tony, and Mario grew up in a large Italian family in Brooklyn, NY. From there, they relocated to North Carolina in 1981 and began selling their delicious pizzas.
In addition to Tony’s authentic NY-style pizza, we also make a traditional white pizza. We top our version with ricotta, fresh garlic, and mozzarella cheese. Plus, we offer plenty of regular and premium toppings to individualize your pizza:
