Feeling famished and looking online for tasty sub sandwiches Philly style? Fortunately, Tony’s Pizza has them! In fact, we have multiple Italian and American subs to tempt your tastebuds. Better yet, we have two sandwich delights that we serve Philly style: our steak sub and our chick-o-Philly. Both are delicious variations of the popular Philly cheesesteak.
When you’re hankering for a Philly cheesesteak or any other delicious sub, try Tony’s Pizza. Our owners have years of experience making delicious food. Three Italian brothers – Vinny, Tony, and Mario – grew up in Brooklyn, NY. Early on, they learned how to make great-tasting Italian food from their family. In the early 80s, they moved to North Carolina to bring a taste of Italy down south. Plus, our customers claim we have some of the best subs in Charlotte and Hickory.
At our local restaurants, we serve sub sandwiches Philly style and other tasty ways in 8 and 12-inch sizes:
Similarly, we have lots of delicious sides to go with your sub. Some popular options include:
Generally, since you’re looking for sub sandwiches Philly style, you probably have an idea of what it is. However, there is some debate on what is a true Philly cheesesteak sandwich. First, let’s consider different ways people eat sandwiches and what they call them. Typically, a sandwich is made from a filling surrounded by some sort of breading.
Types of sandwiches include:
Overall, a submarine sandwich is one of the most popular. Also known as hoagies or grinders, the origin of sub sandwiches is greatly debated. However it got here, there’s virtually no dispute on how delicious it is! More specifically, it’s a little easier to track down who created the original Philly style sub. According to legend, a Philadelphian hot dog stand owner developed it in the 1930s.
First, you start with a fresh Italian or sub roll that has a firm crust and soft center. Second, you fill it with thinly shaved beef, preferably ribeye. Notably, this is a tender cut of meat with robust flavor even when cooked well.
Next, the other fillings have evolved over the years. Originally, chefs topped sub sandwiches Philly style with onions. A few decades later, sandwich shops added cheese. Along with the new ingredient, the sandwich got a name upgrade: the beloved Philly cheesesteak.
Speaking of cheese, there is still considerable debate on which is the best cheese for a Philly cheesesteak sub sandwich. Many folks believe provolone is the best topping. Although, both American and Cheese Whiz are popular options.
Moreover, there are lots of other options for your Philly submarine. From sautéed bell peppers to opting for chicken instead of beef, you can have it YOUR way for a perfect lunch or dinner!
Speaking of options, Philly cheesesteaks, subs and sides aren’t all that’s on our menu. As our name implies, we have delightful NY-Style pizza. Plus, we offer more toppings than most of our competition. Sizes range from a smaller personal 10-inch pizza to our humongous 24-inch pizza that feeds a crowd and is perfect for parties.
Likewise, if you can’t decide on a topping, try one of our specialty pies:
For customers with special dietary needs, we have cauliflower/gluten free crust as well. However, keep in mind that since flour flies around our kitchen, there is a possibility of cross-contamination.
Similarly, we serve authentic Italian entrées as well:
Each entrée comes with a side salad and garlic knots.
Plus, the delicious food doesn’t end there. Our Italian restaurants also serve salads, strombolis, calzones, kids’ meals and several Italian desserts.
Haven’t tried Tony’s Pizza yet? Perhaps, you have some questions. Below, we have questions our customers often ask about our Italian restaurants and sandwiches.
Typically, when diners think of a sandwich, they picture the basic kind. However, even hamburgers and hotdogs are sandwiches (although that hot dog is also a hot-debate topic!). Traditional sandwiches that people envision as most popular are:
Although, subs continue to rise in popularity as a hearty alternative to the traditional sandwich.

For instance, there are many chains such as: Firehouse Subs, Subway, Jimmy Johns, Jersey Mikes and Quiznos. Of course, some of these chains truly do serve tasty sandwiches. However, they don’t do it quite like Tony’s Pizza. Not only do we have delicious subs, we also have lots of appetizers, sides and desserts.

We load our famous steak and cheese with shaved beef and top it with melted cheese which we snuggle into a toasty sub roll. The irresistible Philly cheesesteak has a pretty tasty and somewhat debated history.
For the most part, most folks agree that Pat and Harry Olivieri began the Philly’s journey. Operating a hot dog cart in Philadelphia in the 1930s, the brothers cooked up some beef with onions and served it in a roll. Patrons really liked it. Later, folks covered the beef and onions with cheese and this masterpiece fell into the mouths and hearts of folks across the country.
Nowadays, if you’re searching for the best steak and cheese sub near me, you’ll likely find different versions. For instance, some sub restaurants serve these sandwiches with American cheese or Cheese Whiz. Other diners add mushrooms and bell peppers.
As we mentioned, one thing that sets our menu apart from other local sandwich chains is our wide variety of food. Thus, you can get much more than just a sub at Tony’s.
Choose from a variety of appetizers such as:
In addition to appetizers, we have salads, calzone, stromboli, Italian entrees, kids’ meals and desserts. Moreover, as you probably gathered from our name, we serve pizza too. NY style to be exact. We top our thin, crispy, yet chewy crust with our secret tomato sauce and low-moisture mozzarella for the perfect slice. Better yet, we offer over 2 dozen toppings and several sizes to fully customize your meal.
Stomach growling yet? If you’re ready to order a great-tasting steak and cheese sub near me, stop by Tony’s Pizza. If you have more questions, check out some frequent queries below.
Ah, the great debate. Typically, a sandwich is 2 slices of bread or an opened roll with some kind of filling. Although, a sub uses a long roll. Therefore, we conclude that a sub is a type of sandwich.
That said, if you want to know if a hot dog is a sandwich or a sub or something else altogether, we got nothin. That’s a hard a one and we’re staying out of it!
Well, we think it’s best to leave that question to our customers. Here’s what they have to say about our steak subs:
We ordered a large pizza, Philly cheesesteak and fries. Everything was delicious! Will be visiting again soon.
A hidden spot that we would have never found had I not Googled for good pizza restaurants. – Deirdre C
I just made my second trip to Charlotte in a month and I just made my third trip to Tony’s pizza in a month. I am absolutely hooked on their cheesesteaks. They are huge – the hubby and I can barely finish one. Juicy, tender chopped steak, gooey provolone and lots of grilled peppers, onions and mushrooms stuffed into a super fresh sub roll. It is as good as some that I’ve had in Philly. Really.
Our third visit was for pizza. The XL authentic NY pie was too big to fit on our kitchen table. Once again – really. I thought the sauce had a little too much oregano but I’m the only one who didn’t love it. Four famished family members couldn’t finish this filling food (felt a little like Dr Seuss there for a sec!).
My son is moving from Charlotte next month. There are a lot of things that I’m going to miss – Tony’s Pizza will definitely be one of them. – Sue F.
This is another well debated question. Ultimately, we find it comes down to preference. However, a Philly cheesesteak comes with one of 3 kinds of cheeses: American, provolone, or Cheese Whiz.
