We get it; people adore their pizza in the U.S. In fact, many folks eat it at least once a week. Better yet, choices of pizza style abound from thick, thin, deep dish or stuffed. Therefore, it’s hard to get bored with all the options. Although, statistics indicate that NY Style is a favorite. Since you’re in the Carolinas, you may be wondering how to find the best NY Style pizza near me. No worries, our owners have brought the taste of New York to North Carolina!
Even though we’re also huge fans of New York pies, we simply love pizza in general. Here are some of the main types of pizza that you can find in the U.S. and what makes them different.
Of course, this one is at the top of our list. Brought straight over from immigrants hailing from Italy, NY-Style pies trace their roots to old family recipes. Moreover, bakers tweaked these recipes a tad to fit the needs of New Yorkers.
For instance, workers needed an inexpensive and portable food. While sandwiches were available, they craved something a little different. Thus, NY-Style pizza came to be. With a foldable and crispy outer crust, this tasty dish is easy to eat on the run.
In the 18th century in Naples, Italy, Raffaele Esposito created this masterpiece. During that time, Italians began topping flatbread with tomatoes. Raffaele kicked it up a notch and added fresh mozzarella and basil. The result was a delicious Neapolitan Pie that people across the globe still enjoy today.
In the mid 40s, Detroit tavern owner Gus Guerra decided that pizzas didn’t actually have to be round and cooked them in square pans instead. Moreover, he opted for a mild and sweeter cheese – Wisconsin brick. Quickly, this new option gained popularity and is still a favorite of many today.
A few years prior to the development of Detroit Style pizza, Chicago entrepreneurs Ike Sewell and Richard Ricardo Sr opened a new restaurant – Pizza Uno. Here, they featured a new take on traditional pizza. They reversed the crust a bit creating a deep dish with layers of mozzarella cheese, toppings and crushed tomatoes.
As this was clearly a popular pizza-creation time, another restauranteur added his take on the classic. He ditched the yeast and created a crust with a more cracker-like consistency. Then, he topped it with a unique blend of cheese found in Provel – white cheddar, provolone and Swiss.
As noted previously, most folks agree that NY style pizza is their go-to. However, many restaurants struggle to create the perfect pie. Some folks claim “it’s the water”, while others insist it’s a special oven or spice. At Tony’s Pizza, we’ve figured it out. (And, no, we’re not sharing our secret but we WILL share our fabulous pie with you!)
That said, here are a few tips to make the best NY style pizza. Typically this masterpiece has a thin crust with a crunch and chewiness. Moreover this combination exists without being too doughy. Likewise, the crust must be flexible enough so that it’s foldable. High-protein flour, extra olive oil and sugar help achieve this directive. Of course, hand tossing the crust is a must. This, this…is an art in itself!
The sauce is a critical component as well. Typically, chefs add onions, garlic, basil, and oregano. Another important must is using low-moisture mozzarella so that the crust doesn’t get soggy.
Remember when we mentioned those special ovens? Well, there’s a little bit of truth to that. For even baking, NY style pizza requires a very toasty oven for its intrinsic flavor and texture.

Truly authentic New York pizza. The food here is amazing. I am from New York and it’s just as good as home. Don’t order the large pizza unless you are very hungry. It’s Huge!!!! The place is small. Best to order ahead because they make it all fresh. Best pizza and pasta in Charlotte. – Donald W.
My family and I came here for the first time and had a 24″ pizza (gigantic and lasted for 4 days) half sausage half supreme. Some of the best pizza I’ve had in my life and if I could I would eat here daily. The environment is friendly, the wait isn’t long, and the smells are amazing. We also had cannoli and they were beyond delicious as well. – Sharrice A.
