Your child worked hard and reached an important milestone, graduation. This pinnacle moment calls for a celebration with a party. Once you’ve narrowed the guest list, it’s time to sift through graduation party food ideas.

A Few Graduation Party Food Ideas

Hosting your child’s graduation party can be a successful, low-stress event where everyone has fun. Of course, early planning is key to creating a memorable event. Moreover, the menu is one of the important elements in creating a positive atmosphere while facilitating socializing. When deciding on food items, keep in mind these important aspects:

  1. Budget

Being a proud parent, it’s very easy to overspend. Setting a budget can help you stay out of debt and avoid waste. Typically, the average cost for a graduation party with 60 guests is about $1130 or $19 per guest.

  1. Drinks

Typically, a party guest will consume 2 drinks per hour on average. However, consider buying extra in case it’s an overly hot day.  Furthermore, buying bottled water and canned soda eliminates the need to purchase cups.

  1. Food

Even though this is a graduation celebration for your child, you’ll want to talk with guests and enjoy yourself too. However, preparing food that requires a lot of work or last-minute attention will draw you from the festivities.

Instead, pick some easy dishes to prepare so you can have fun too. Food bars are popular options allowing each party guest to assemble their meal. Another option is to lay out a charcuterie board with cold cuts, cheese, crackers, fruit, pickles, and nuts. Some other simple graduation party food ideas include:

  • Vegetable tray
  • Fruit Salad
  • Coleslaw
  • Pasta salad
  • Chips and dip
  • Bean salad
  • Baked beans
  • Pork/chicken sliders
  • Hamburgers/hot dogs
  • Sub/Sandwich tray
  • Wings
  1. Cake

Of course, the cake is the centerpiece of the graduation celebration. You can buy reasonably priced ones at your local supermarket or warehouse club. Cupcakes are another sweet option offering simplicity and ease of serving. Whether you choose cupcakes or a sheet cake, your guests will enjoy indulging in dessert.

Catering The Event Is Another Option

Throwing any party is a huge undertaking, especially if the event is at your home. Cleaning and preparation are time-consuming and draining. However, you can lighten your load by buying prepared food or having your event catered. Moreover, pizza is a great choice for many reasons:

  • Everyone loves a pizza party
  • It’s reasonably priced
  • Toppings offer different options
  • Easy cleanup
  • Portable

One of the best places to buy pizza is your local Tony’s Pizza. Since 1981, our restaurants have been making delicious NY style pizza. Depending on your party and topping preferences, you may need several different sizes. Use the following chart to figure out how many pizzas you’ll need:

  • 1-2 guests order a 10-inch pie
  • 3-4 guests order a 15-inch pie
  • 5-6 guests order a 17-inch pie
  • 6-8 guests order a 19-inch pie
  • 8-10 guests order a 24-inch pie

Plus, if you want to offer appetizers, other main dishes, or desserts, we have you covered. Tony’s has an extensive menu that includes party trays of your favorites:

  • Garlic knots
  • Garden salad
  • Greek salad
  • Spaghetti with marinara sauce/meatballs
  • Lasagna
  • Baked ziti
  • Chicken parmigiana
  • Ravioli
  • Eggplant parmigiana
  • Cannoli

Subs and wings make great party food too. Luckily, we have those as well!

FAQs About Hosting A Graduation Party

Are you in the party planning stages, and still deciding your options? Below, we answer a few questions to help you create a memorable event.

What Are Some Ideas To Make The Party Entertaining?

Of course, you want to create memories for your graduate. However, you also want to make a pleasurable event for your guests so that they also have a fun experience. Incorporating particular elements sets the mood and encourages interaction.

For example, centering the party around a theme will connect guests visually to the guest of honor. From the major to the college choice, the cohesiveness of a theme will make guests feel included and appreciated.

Playing background music is another idea. You can create a playlist of your graduate’s favorite songs or graduation-themed songs.

How about a photo booth with fun props? Teenagers love to take photos and this provides a fun and interactive spot to create lasting memories.

Where Is The Best Place To Host A Graduation Party?

Often, the best place to host your event is right in your backyard. However, have a plan in place in case of inclement weather. Renting a tent will protect your guest from an unexpected rain shower as well as shade from the glaring sun.

Another idea is to rent a pavilion at your local park. Usually, these are affordable and convenient spaces. It’s a good idea to view the location of your pavilion before renting it.  You’ll want a parking lot nearby as well as adequate facilities. Make sure you book at least 3-4 months in advance to ensure you get the pavilion of your choice.

Looking forward to watching the game with friends or family and trying to figure out what to serve? Luckily, the team at Tony’s Pizza is sharing some of their favorite and easy game day food ideas!

Of course, you can make it even easier and just order from Tony’s (we’ll go into that a bit later). However, we thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite things to make when we’re watching football, basketball, soccer or just having a party to celebrate friends and family.

Easy Game Day Food Ideas

If you’re thinking about hosting a gathering and want to keep it simple, consider 3 courses or types of food to serve for game day. Primarily, you need:

  • Appetizers
  • Main Course
  • Desserts

Below, we’ve picked a recipe for each based on easy game day food ideas that we like to serve.

Awesome Appetizers

First, start strong with an appetizer. Preferably, this should be easy to make and easy to eat. Think party finger foods. Generally, guests will munch on these while prepping for the game and debating on who’s going to win!

Plus, if you’re trying to figure out football game day food, these sort of look like little footballs! If you want to get really fancy, you could use piping to mimic football laces over the cream cheese stuffing with a softened version of cream cheese. Just add a touch of food coloring to either the main cream cheese filling or the laces to make it stand out.

Cheesy Jalapeño Poppers

Ingredients

  • 10 jalapeños (halved and deseeded)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Olive oil spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Mix cream cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and paprika in a bowl.
  3. Spoon the cheese mixture into each jalapeño half.
  4. Dip the stuffed jalapeños into breadcrumbs to coat.
  5. Place on a baking tray, spray with olive oil, and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Prefer takeout? Tony’s Pizza’s famous wings and Italian meatballs make for fantastic crowd-pleasing appetizers! Or, we actually have jalapeno poppers that we can make for you!

Magnificent Main Course

Second, a main course should be hearty. Lots of folks opt for chili which is a tasty choice. Similarly, nachos are a great go to. However, they can get a little soggy while sitting out. Thus, you could create a nacho-style bar instead for your party.

Loaded Nachos Bar

Ingredients

  • Tortilla chips
  • 1 lb cooked ground beef (seasoned with taco spices), chicken or ground turkey
  • 1 cup black beans (drained)
  • 2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • Bowls of additional toppings of choice (salsa, sour cream, jalapeños, guacamole, chopped cilantro, shredded lettuce)
  • Seasonings such as dried cilantro, cumin and a team member favorite – Tajin!

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread tortilla chips evenly on a sheet pan.
  3. Scatter cheese on top.
  4. Bake for 10 minutes or until the cheese melts.
  5. Set out nachos with cheese among bowls of the toppings, black beans and beef (or chicken or ground turkey). Therefore, guests can add what they want, when they want it. You could also offer soft or hard tortilla shells in case a guest prefers a taco.

If cooking isn’t your thing, subs are the perfect main course as well. In fact, you can order multiple large subs and slice them up into smaller portions for easy, hand-held snacks. Conversely, pizza is pretty much always a safe bet for game day party food.

Plus, if you have guests who avoid gluten, we have gluten-free and cauliflower crust. Just keep in mind that flour does fly around our kitchen. Consequently, there is a possibility of cross-contamination so make sure your guests are aware of this!

Similarly, we have vegan cheese as well. So, let us know if you’re trying to avoid dairy.

Dive Into Party Desserts

Finally, don’t forget all those sweet tooths (sweet teeth?) at your game day party. While decorated cupcakes are fun, we actually have a favorite twist on a classic 7-layer cookie that’s easy to make. Since we’re leaving out the coconut and nuts, we call them 5-layers cookies!

5-Layer Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 14-oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups cups graham cracker crumbs (if you have a gluten-free guest, opt for GF)
  • 1 (11-oz) package of semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 (11-oz) package of butterscoth chips
  • ¾ cup of butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F.
  2. Combine cracker crumbs and melted butter. Press firmly into baking dish. 13×9 is what our team member uses.
  3. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over pressed crumb mixture. Then, layer semi-sweet and butterscotch chips evenly.
  4. Bake for 25 minutes (or until sides get a teeny bit caramel colored and bubbly).
  5. Let cool before cutting because they are a bit gooey but so yummy!!

Alternatively, we make desserts at Tony’s Pizza’s too. So, you can order some extra for varying taste buds. Or, save time and let us make all the desserts. We have rich tiramisu, crispy cannoli, cheesecake and limoncello mascarpone cake.

Quick Preparation for Game Day Treats

Rather spend less time prepping so you can hang with your guests? Below, we have some winning ideas for game day food prep:

  • Make Some Party Items Ahead: Chop veggies, cook proteins or meats, and pre-portion sauces the night before.
  • Go Disposable: Use disposable plates and utensils to minimize cleanup.
  • Order in Advance: Similarly, ordering hassle-free takeout from Tony’s Pizza means less time on the cooking and prepping in the kitchen. This equals more time enjoying the game. Keep it simple and serve our wings, meatballs, subs or pizzas straight out of the box!

Party Presentation for Game Day Food

Half of the food fun is creating an enticing spread. Luckily, we have tips to make everything look just as good as it tastes!

  • Go Buffet Style: Lay out food in themed sections (e.g., appetizers, main course, desserts). Use tiered serving trays for an appetizing layout.
  • Opt for Mini Portions: Slice subs or pizzas from Tony’s Pizza into smaller, bite-sized pieces for easy sharing. If you want your pizza double cut, let us know when you order.
  • Incorporate Decorations: Use team-themed napkins, tablecloths, and banners to tie everything together.
  • Label Everything: Small chalkboards or printable labels make it easy for guests to identify dishes and toppings. This is especially helpful if you have guests with dietary restrictions.

All ages enjoy a fun Italian themed party. The food is fabulous and it’s an excellent way to celebrate the culture of another country. Before we get into the food, here are some fun Italian party activities and decorations for your event.  Keep in mind, Tony’s Pizza can help with all your Italian catering needs if you’re not up for making the food!

Décor for an Italian Party

Notably, the Italian flag and flag colors make decorating for an Italian themed party simple. With three vertical stripes in green, white, and red, it provides a perfect color scheme for your décor. Incorporate these colors to bring all of your Italian themed party decorations together. Here are a few other ideas:

  • Use checkered tablecloths in red, white or green
  • Place colored pasta of various shapes in large jars or string them and hang as garland
  • Opt for Italian wine or olive oil bottles as vases

Next, determine the vibe for your party. If you prefer a rustic feel, use wine barrels for party tables or make candleholders with wine glasses. Or, if it’s a kid’s party, use bright colors. Colored plates in red, green, and white add to the atmosphere. Likewise, use the Italian flag as placemats.

Kids’ Games for Your Italian Themed Party

If you’re inviting the whole family to your Italian themed party, have games for all ages. Here are various activities for the kids:

  • Strega comanda color – In this active game, one child is the “strega” (aka witch). The witch calls out a color and everyone must touch an item of that color before the witch tags them. The first person tagged becomes the new witch. If no one is tagged, the strega calls out a new color.
  • Piovra – In this game, one child is the “piovra” (aka octopus). They stand in the middle of the yard or court and can only move horizontally along that line. All the other children playing must run to the opposite side without being tagged. If piovra tags them, they become a baby octopus. Then, they too can tag players except they can’t move like the piovra. The last player remaining untagged wins and then becomes the new piovra.
  • Italian scavenger hunt – Make your Italian themed party educational and learn some Italian words. It’s similar to a normal scavenger hunt except the words are in Italian. If needed, add a hint in English to each Italian word. For instance, a word on the list might be “lampada” (lamp). Your clue could be, “it lights up the room.” Make the clues easy or challenging depending on the age of the guests. Truly, this is a game adults may enjoy too! Keep in mind, you can create a list for an indoor or outdoor party.

If you prefer more traditional Italian party games for kids, check out this resource.

Adult Activities for An Italian Party

Even though games for the kids are so fun that some of the adults may want to join in as well, here are some Italian style party ideas for older guests:

  • Wine tasting –Have each adult guest bring a bottle of Italian wine. Provide small sample cups for sipping and have guests vote on their favorite wines.
  • Balsamic vinegar and olive oil tasting – Prefer to keep alcohol at a minimum? Have a fun tasting activity for people who don’t drink. Similar to the wine tasting, have partygoers bring a balsamic vinegar or olive oil. Cut crusty bread cut into chunks for guests and drizzle each of the vinegars and oils on plates. Therefore, guests can easily dip to test and find their favorites.
  • Italian trivia –Pair up partygoers and play trivia! Ask Italian-themed questions. Better yet, provide Italian-themed prizes for the winners including a gift certificate to Tony’s Pizza!

Moreover, Italian culture encompasses relaxing and spending time together while enjoying fabulous food. So, don’t overstress yourself planning activities. Let Tony’s Pizza do the heavy lifting with authentic Italian party cuisine.
